Provenance: from an aristocratic collection in Rome.
In his time, Jacob de Wit was one of the most famous artists in Amsterdam, well-known above all for his mural and ceiling decorations for the homes of well-to-do patricians. He specialised in decorative trompe l’oeil painting executed in grisaille in which he was very skilful at reproducing stone reliefs. Germanische Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg has a preparatory drawing for our painting with a slightly different composition.
